I have noticed that whenever I get stressed, I feel like putting something in my mouth. Often that stress occurs at work but there are also times when I want to eat when I’m bored as well. The ultimate snack for me is a chocolate bar but obviously eating copious of chocolate has untoward consequences on my waistline. The size of a chocolate bar, the discreet ability to eat it and the actual look and taste all play a role in my chocolate addiction.

On my quest to find a better snack alternative which I can have near my work desk, I realized that carrying a 6 oz box of blackberries to work gives me the same satisfaction that the chocolate bar provided.  That box fits well in my purse, gives me the oral satisfaction that I crave and does not contribute a huge amount of calories. At around 75 calories for a 6oz box, eating it feels divine. Even those watching their carbs can indulge in it, since its low in sugar and one cup contains 6 net carbs.

The dark blue color of these berries intrigue me and I actually look at them before popping these jewels into my mouth. The dark color tells me that its rich in anthocyanin which help fight free radicals in the body. They are rich in Vitamin C which is necessary to produce collagen and provide Vitamin A, K and manganese, all needed by the body. Fiber is also provided which keeps me satiated and they may even improve cognitive and motor skills which is an added bonus.

Obviously, not everyone is a fan of blackberries but having some berries including blueberries or raspberries in your go to quick snack repertoire will having you make better choices that will prove beneficial in the long run. By the way, while writing this blog, I did polish off a box but in my defense I haven’t had dinner and its getting late.
