Maintaining good health is a top priority for me. It’s not just about looking good, but feeling good too. I’ve learned that taking care of my body and mind is essential for leading a happy and fulfilling life. Over the years, I’ve developed a few habits that have helped me achieve and maintain good health.

Here are my top five:

exercise and movement

Exercise regularly: I love to move my body, whether it’s through walking, slow jogging, or resistance training with my son Exercise helps me feel energized and focused, and it’s a great way to reduce stress. I make sure to incorporate some form of physical activity into my daily routine, even if it’s just a quick walk at our local YMCA.

Get enough sleep: Sleep is non-negotiable for me. It’s like hitting the reset button on my body and mind. I aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night (granted this not always happen, life does get in our way!) , and I prioritize creating a relaxing sleep environment. This means no screens before bed and keeping my bedroom cool and dark.

Eat a balanced diet: I’ve learned that what I eat has a huge impact on how I feel. It does make a difference when it come to my energy levels. I try to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables. What I do struggle with are whole grains. I just love white rice, but try to be aware of my portion size. Lean proteins, and healthy fats are other two macronutrients to keep an eye on. I continue to find my evening meal to be a challenge as energy levels are lower.Portion size, portion size, portion size.Towards the end of the day our energy levels are lower making us more susceptible to temptations and eating more. I also make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Practice stress management:

Stress is a part of life, but I’ve learned that managing it effectively is key to maintaining good health. I get up earlier. (Usually between 4-5AM) I’m usually the first to wake up in the family. I really like this feeling in the morning where there is a sense of tranquility giving me enough time to contemplate what I wish to do or even achieve that day. I do try to use the Apple App on my watch for meditation. Currently, I vary between one to three minutes of meditation in the morning, which I think, at first, is ample time to get used to this practice. Hopefully with time I can increase the time spent meditating as I do see value in doing so. I feel this activity makes me feel calm and centered.

Cultivate social connections: I’ve realized that social connections are essential for good health. Spending time with loved ones, connecting with friends, and participating in community events all help me feel connected and supported. For example I spend every evening playing a board game with my daughter. Board games are not only fun, but I do think that play is an important factor for maintaining and even improving cognitive health.

In conclusion, maintaining good health is a journey, not a destination. It takes consistent effort and commitment to prioritize your health and well-being. But the rewards are worth it.

By incorporating these five habits into your daily routine, you’ll be well on your way to achieving and maintaining good health. As the famous quote by Buddha goes, “To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
